New Delhi, Oct. 2 (BNA): Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched 5G services in India on Saturday, describing it as a step towards the new era.
A government statement said the launch in select cities would cover the entire country over the next two years.
Modi has launched the much awaited services that aim to provide smooth coverage, high data rate, lower internet latency and highly reliable connections in the presence of telecom leaders in India.
“This event will be engraved in history,” Modi said at the launch event.
“It was a step into the country’s new era and the beginning of endless opportunities.”
Bharti Airtel is rolling out 5G services in eight cities on Saturday and set March 2024 as the deadline for nationwide coverage of up to 5,000 towns.
Telecom company Reliance Jio plans to start in four metropolitan areas in October and hopes to reach most cities and towns within 18 months.
The government has said that the cumulative economic impact of 5G networks on India is expected to reach $450 billion by 2035.
Research agency OMDIA predicts that with 369 million 5G subscriptions, which is over half of all global 5G subscriptions currently, India would be behind China and the United States in the global rankings by 2026.
