Iga Swiatek becomes 1st Polish tennis player ranked No. 1

Washington, April 4 (BUS): Iga Swiatek moved up one place to the top of the WTA rankings on Monday, becoming the first tennis player from Poland to hold the number one spot in the sport, according to the Associated Press.

20-year-old Swiatek — pronounced shvee-ON-tek — takes over from Ash Barty, who announced last month that she was retiring at 25 after more than two years in the top spot.

Swiatek won the 2020 French Open and is currently on a 17-game winning streak that includes the title at the Miami Open, defeating Naomi Osaka 6-4, 6-9 in Saturday’s final.

It came after Swiatek’s victory in Indian Wells, California, last month, which made her the fourth woman to complete what’s known as the “Sunshine Double.”
