Milan, July 18 (BUS): Zlatan Ibrahimovic will continue to play for Milan at the age of 41 after renewing his contract for another year, giving the striker another chance in the Champions League.
Ibrahimovic has missed large parts of Milan’s Serie A-winning campaign through injury and will not even be able to return to the field until the end of the year – two months after his 41st birthday – after undergoing knee surgery in May.
Milan issued a brief statement on Monday announcing Ibrahimovic’s contract renewal until June 30, 2023, according to the Associated Press.
The club and Ibrahimovic posted a video on social media, showing the striker’s highlights from both periods with the Rossoneri, with audio commentary from the Sweden international.
Ibrahimovic has changed Milan since returning to the Rossoneri at the end of 2019, shortly after the team’s 5-0 defeat by Atalanta. He helped Milan climb to the top of the Serie A and end their 11-year wait for the title.
Despite being hampered by injuries last season, Ibrahimovic made his presence felt off the field as he led a young team to an unlikely Scudetto title.
This was his second with the club, as he was also there the last time Milan won the title, in 2011.
Ibrahimovic also won titles with Ajax, Inter Milan, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United in a long and illustrious career. However, one of the titles missing from his impressive collection is the Champions League.
Milan’s return to competition last season – after an eight-year hiatus – was brief as the seven-times European champions were eliminated from the group stage.
