Hong Kong’s new virus cases top 10,000 in spiraling outbreak

Hong Kong, Feb. 25 (BNA): Hong Kong on Friday recorded another sharp jump in new COVID-19 cases to more than 10,000 in the last 24 hours as it battled the worst outbreak of the epidemic.

Health officials said the number of new daily cases reached 10,010, after exceeding 6,000 last week and 8,000 earlier this week in the outbreak. The city reports about 50 deaths per day, many of them among unvaccinated elderly people.

The government has announced plans to test everyone in the semi-autonomous Chinese city of 7.4 million people next month as it tries to stick to a zero-coronavirus policy similar to China’s strict mainland approach.

Mainland experts and builders are setting up temporary testing facilities and building isolation centers to deal with the increasing caseload. The zero COVID approach requires anyone who tests positive, even without symptoms, to isolate to prevent the disease from spreading.

Hong Kong launched a vaccine permit system this week, requiring people entering malls, restaurants, gyms and other venues to be vaccinated. This requirement has prompted many who have not been vaccinated to get the vaccine.
