Hong Kong reports more than 6,000 new cases in virus surge

Hong Kong, Feb. 19 (BNA): Hong Kong announced 15 deaths from the coronavirus and more than 6,000 confirmed cases for a second day in an increase the Chinese territory’s leader said its overcrowded hospitals said.

On Saturday, the government also announced plans to have construction crews from mainland China build 10,000-bed isolation units after overcrowding in hospitals forced patients to wait outdoors in the winter cold, the Associated Press reported.

There were 6,063 confirmed cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of infections in the territory to 46,763. That was a slight decrease from 6,116 on Thursday, but one of the highest daily in Hong Kong.
