Harris announces $20 million new clean energy funding for Mekong region

Bangkok, Nov. 20 (BNA): US Vice President Kamala Harris announced $20 million in new funding for clean energy projects in the Mekong region, during the last day of her tour to Thailand following a regional summit.

She spoke to civil society and business leaders in Bangkok after a meeting of the 21-member APEC bloc concluded the day before.

“Bold climate action is not only essential to protecting the people on our planet and our natural resources, but it is also a powerful engine for economic growth,” she said.

In a previous press release, she said the administration would seek congressional funding for the Japan-US-Mekong Energy Partnership (JUMPP), through which the two countries partner with countries in the region to promote sustainable energy, Reuters reported.

“In particular, we know that the climate crisis is a real threat to communities that depend on the Mekong River. In Thailand, Vietnam and Laos.”
