BEIJING, Feb. 11 (BUS): Lara Gut Bahrami finally took the Olympic gold, winning the Super G at the Beijing Olympics on Friday. This came in the event that caused great disappointment for the Swiss skater on one of the sport’s biggest stages, according to the Associated Press.
Two-time Alpine Olympic gold medalist Mikaela Shiffrin finished ninth, 0.79sec behind Gut Bahrami. The American finished at least this time, having exited from her previous two races in Beijing.
Gut Bahrami’s gold comes after finishing fourth in a row in the Super G at the Olympics. The 30-year-old has two bronze medals, one from Monday’s giant slalom. She cried after taking only bronze in the downhill in 2014.
There were more tears for her on Friday, and Gott Bahrami wiped them from her eyes as she stared at the gold medalist around her neck after climbing to the top of an Olympic podium for the first time.
Gut-Behrami had an impressive world championship last year, winning two golds in Cortina, in Super G and Giant Slalom.
She won a Super G in her home country of Switzerland in December but crashed into another Super G the next day. Shortly thereafter, she missed nearly four weeks of racing after contracting COVID-19.
Her colleague, Michelle Jezin, had to recover from the disease after being diagnosed with mononucleosis in July. Gissin also cried on the podium on Friday after finishing third, 0.30 seconds behind Gut Bahrami.
Austria’s Miriam Buechner won the silver in her first Olympic sprint, finishing 0.22 seconds behind Gut Bahrami.
Defending champion Ester Ledecka failed in her attempt to win an unprecedented consecutive double. It ranked fifth with 0.43.
Ledecka became the first competitor to win gold in two different sports at the same Winter Games with her surprise Super G victory in Pyeongchang in 2018. She successfully defended the gold medal in the giant slalom parallel to figure skating on Tuesday.
The Italians have dominated the Women’s Super G Championship this season, winning six of the seven World Cup races and taking the top three spots in the discipline rankings.
But Sofia Jogia, still hoping to defend her title on the downhill on Tuesday, decided not to race in the Super G on her way back from last month’s crash.
Federica Brignone is the seventh highest ranked Italian.
