Guimarães double gives Newcastle 2-1 win over Leicester

London, April 17 (BNA): Bruno Guimarães completed Newcastle’s comeback by scoring the second goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time to achieve a 2-1 victory over Leicester and ease the fears of relegation in the English Premier League on Sunday.

The Brazilian, who earlier called off Ademola Lookman’s opener in the first half, overturned Joe Willock’s skewed pass to send 14th-placed Newcastle 12 points off the relegation zone with six games left.

Leicester, who reached the semi-finals of the European League on Thursday, remained in ninth place, according to the Associated Press.

Leicester took the lead in the 19th minute after Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall sent a low corner kick into a close corner by Ayos Perez. When Perez moved the ball inside, Lookman fired across a crowded penalty area and under goalkeeper Martin Debravka.

Newcastle equalized in the 30th minute. Defender Dan Byrne headed a corner kick for Jongo Shelvey and Kasper Schmeichel stopped Guimarães’ initial shot.

But Guimarães then put the ball between the goalkeeper’s legs and across the goal line. Referee Jared Gillett changed his mind after advising him to review his initial decision to disqualify the goal.

After denying Dan Byrne a late Kelechi Iheanacho win in a Dewsbury-Hall cross, Guimarães pounced to give Newcastle their fifth consecutive home win.
