Google celebrates Ousha Al Suwaidi

Abu Dhabi, November 28 (BNA): Google Doodle celebrates Aousha bint Khalifa Al Suwaidi, also known as Aousha the Poet, who is considered one of the greatest Nabatean poets of the 20th century.

The doodle was drawn by Abu Dhabi-based guest artist Reem Al Mazrouei.

On this day in 2011, her contributions to literature were recognized at a prestigious event. At the event, several well-known scribes recited Usha al-Suwaidi’s poems that he wrote in her honor, according to Google.

The poetic society also established an annual award for Emirati women poetess by the name of Awsha Al-Suwaidi. She was also honored by a library at the Emirates International School, and a section of the Women’s Museum in Dubai.

On January 1, 1920, Ousha, nicknamed the Arab Girl, was born in the city of Al-Ain to a family that adored literature, and grew up immersed in wonderful poetry.

At fifteen, she had gained national recognition for her powerful poems.

Usha’s success in a male-dominated genre opened the door for the next generation of female poets.

The landscapes of the Arabian Gulf and the desert have inspired many of her poems, which deal with themes such as love, wisdom, patriotism, and nostalgia.

Written in the Nabataean language, the poems describe her personal experiences in the UAE, as well as her past and rich culture.

Today, Osha is remembered for her profound work. The songs of famous Emirati and Arab singers have revived the memory of a large number of her poems to be heard by people everywhere.
