Gladbach in crisis after 2-1 loss to Union, Dortmund wins

Berlin, Jan. 22 (BNA): Max Cruz scored two goals for Union Berlin to leave Borussia Monchengladbach in crisis on Saturday after their 2-1 defeat in the German Bundesliga, the Associated Press reported.

It was Gladbach’s fourth consecutive home defeat, just days after they were knocked out of the German Cup against second-division side Hannover.

The recent defeats added to the pressure on coach Addy Hutter, who was already on probation after losing six of his last eight games in all competitions.

Gladbach are just three points clear of the relegation zone and Hutter said the squad would be “several weeks” without captain Lars Stendel, who injured his knee in training on Friday.

Al-Ittihad, which was only promoted to the Bundesliga in 2019, finished fourth, the last qualifying position for the Champions League.

Doniel Malin created three goals to lead second-placed Borussia Dortmund to a 3-2 victory over Hoffenheim and reduced the difference with Bayern Munich to three points.

Bayern visit struggling Hertha Berlin on Sunday.

Erling Haaland, who scored the opening goal for Dortmund, was knocked out in the second half with an apparent thigh injury.

18-year-old Florian Virts shone, Moussa Diaby scored a hat-trick, defeating Bayer Leverkusen Augsburg 5-1 to cement the third place.

Freiburg moved up fifth with a 2-0 win over relegation favorites Augsburg, and last-placed Grether Fürth took his second win of the season with a 2-1 win over Mainz.
