Milan, March 10 (BNA): Two important matches with three goals and six points. Olivier Giroud keeps Milan largely in the title race, according to the Associated Press.
Giroud has scored 11 goals in all competitions since joining Milan from Chelsea in the off-season, but his ability to do so in the big games could be the difference for the Rossoneri.
The Milan striker scored twice in the 2-1 win over defending champions Inter Milan at the start of February, and did so again last weekend with a lone goal in the 1-0 win over hosts Napoli that sent his side two points clear. Siri A.
This was definitely where he was at Diego Armando Maradona’s stadium as David Calabria’s rotting shot deflected wide before Giroud showed great reflexes to turn it into the bottom corner.
Milan play in the middle of the table with Empoli on Saturday and are seeking to maintain their advantage over Inter, who played a game less. Napoli is only three points behind the Rossoneri.
No wonder Giroud was smiling when he was spotted outside the Milan headquarters earlier this week. He took pictures with fans and when someone asked him if Milan would win the title this year, he replied with a smile: “Yes, of course.”
Giroud was signed in part as a backup for Zlatan Ibrahimovic. But, after 40-year-old Ibrahimovic spent large parts of the season through injury, Giroud found himself a regular on the squad.
Ibrahimovic, who helped Milan finish second in Serie A last season, returned from his latest injury in the closing stages of Sunday’s game. But Giroud is not interested in the competition for the starting role among the aging strikers.
Giroud already has this experience of a long and illustrious career: he won three cups with Arsenal and also won the cup with Chelsea, in addition to winning the Champions League and the European League.
He also helped France win the 2018 World Cup, but Giroud only won the league title once, with Montpellier in France in 2012. That was the year after Milan’s last Serie A title before the club’s fortunes waned.
Giroud is ready to end this wait for him and the club.
