Germany’s seven-day Covid-19 incidence rate highest since mid-May

Highest Covid-19 infection rate in Germany for seven days since mid-May

Berlin, October 23 (BUS): Data from the country’s disease control agency showed that the number of Covid-19 infections in Germany reached exactly 100 per 100,000 people in the past seven days, the highest rate since mid-May.

For comparison, the day before the value was 95.1 and a week ago it was 70.8, according to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), according to the German news agency (dpa).

Health offices in Germany have reported 15,145 new infections with RKI in the past 24 hours as of early Saturday. A week ago, the number was 10,949 infections.

Across Germany, 86 deaths were recorded within 24 hours, up from 75 a week ago.

Europe is seeing a rise in cases and hospital admissions – sometimes staggeringly high, depending on the country – with colder weather coming and vaccine uptakes delayed in some places.

Central and Eastern Europe has seen the worst of this wave: the number of daily cases in Russia continues to reach an all-time high; Poland said this week it was facing an “explosion” of injuries. Latvia went into a month-long lockdown.

In Germany, the number of coronavirus patients hospitalized per 100,000 people in the past seven days remains low, with the RKI putting the number at 2.68. The government considers hospitalization the most important indicator when considering re-tightening of restrictions.

Sixty-six percent of Germany’s population is fully vaccinated.
