GCC-Iraq power interconnection project launched

Manama, June 9 (BNA): Electricity and Water Affairs Minister Yasser bin Ibrahim Humaidan said that the electrical interconnection project for the Gulf Cooperation Council countries is one of the most important strategic projects in the region.

He emphasized the project’s contribution to reducing partial and total outages of Gulf networks, by providing immediate support through energy transmission.

This came in a statement by the minister during his attendance at a ceremony held in the city of Khobar, Saudi Arabia, to inaugurate the electrical interconnection project between the Gulf Cooperation Council countries and the Republic of Iraq.

He indicated that the project will enhance cooperation and meet part of the demand for electric power, especially in southern Iraq, in addition to supplying the Iraqi electrical grid with at least 500 megawatts.

He referred to Bahrain’s endeavor to enhance joint cooperation with other countries in an integrated manner, including infrastructure projects and basic services, and to achieve the desired development goals to achieve sustainability, in line with the vision of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, and the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa Crown Prince and Prime Minister.

He pointed out that the connection to Iraq will contribute to increasing the economic operation of the network at the regional level in preparation for expansion at the Arab and international levels, as well as increasing reliability and raising energy efficiency in the Gulf network.
