Gargaoon, the mid-Ramadan sweet treat tradition, rewards students

Manama, April 10 (BNA): Known for its celebration of diversity and local traditions, the Bahrain School is back in prominence once again in the month of Ramadan by hosting the International Day Iftar and welcoming the Qarghoon.

Usually held in the middle of Ramadan, the Qarghoon is a traditional reward for young people trying to fast for the first time.

The tradition is a Halloween event of sorts, but no spooky costumes, with girls and boys donning their best clothes and asking for sweets from their neighbors.

However, today the celebration takes place in one place and the little ones get their rewards.

At the Bahrain School, Arabic language students and their teachers, dressed in traditional clothes, distributed Gargaoon bags to the students at the end of the day during their study period.

Gargaoon songs were played as they moved from class to class handing out sacks.

Keeping up with its cultural traditions, Bahrain School also held a fun-filled International Day/Iftar. Two aspiring IB CAS students, Zoe Cochran and Veronica Shaukry, led the event for their final CAS project.

There were many booths representing countries around the world, and tastings complemented the experience. Live music, an open soccer field and perfect weather made for an unforgettable evening.

The IB CAS stands for Creativity, Activity, and Service, and is an essential counterbalance to the academic rigor of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. It aims to motivate students to show initiative and perseverance, and to develop collaborative problem-solving skills.
