Paris, June 1 (US): Coco Gauff thought she was about to take to the court to play her second-round match at the French Open. “I finished with probably 70% of the warm-up,” the runner-up at last year’s Roland Garros said later.
In her match up at Court Suzanne Lenglen on Thursday, No. 8 seed Yannick Sinner was working for a win while leading 5-4 in the fourth set against Danielle Altmaier, reports the Associated Press.
Sinner was then one point away. Except he couldn’t convert that match point – he had a chance to beat his head, and instead essentially sent the ball to Altmaier, who responded with a forehand to the top of the bar of the net and fluttered past Sinner – or else he reached close after.
They would go on for another 1 hour and 43 minutes, until Altmaier finally got his fifth point of the match with a 111 mph ace down the middle to seal 6-7(0), 7-6(7), 1-6, 7-6 (4), 7-5 victory.
After the delay, the 19-year-old American ended up beating Julia Graber 6-2, 6-3 in 1 hour 8 minutes. Gauff’s next match will be in the third round on Saturday against 16-year-old Russian Mira Andreeva.
Today, Friday, Court Philippe Chatrier will feature some of the sport’s best players as the third round finishes: Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Aryna Sabalenka and Jessica Pegula. On Lenglen, fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas faces 2021 French Open runner-up Diego Schwartzman, while seventh seed Andrey Rublev plays Lorenzo Sonego.
Peyton Stearns, the 21-year-old American who won the NCAA title at The University of Texas last year, will try to dethrone ninth seed Daria Kasatkina, a semi-finalist a year ago.
