French minister Beaune says financial sanctions could be taken against Poland

Paris, October 21 (BNA) French European Affairs Minister Clement Bon emphasized last Thursday that financial sanctions could be imposed on Poland if dialogue with the country on the priority of European laws did not succeed.

Earlier in October, the Polish Constitutional Court stated that elements of EU law contradict the Polish constitution.

European Union leaders gather in Brussels for a two-day summit, with Poland and energy prices high on the agenda.

The French president and Dutch prime minister are particularly careful to prevent their governments’ monetary contributions to the EU from benefiting socially conservative politicians who undermine the human rights enshrined in the laws of Western liberal democracies.

“EU countries that violate the rule of law should not receive money from the union,” European Parliament President David Sassoli said before the meeting of leaders of the 27 member states in Brussels on Thursday and Friday.

“The European Union is a society built on the principles of democracy and the rule of law. If it is under threat in a member state, the EU must act to protect it.”

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki is set to defend the October 7 ruling by the Polish Constitutional Court that elements of EU law contravene the country’s constitution.

“It’s a big problem and a challenge to the European project,” said a French official for Polish rule.

Morawiecki has already come under fire from EU lawmakers this week and the commission chief said the challenge to the integrity of the European legal system would not go unanswered.

This, in addition to other policies introduced by the ruling Law and Justice party, is set to cost Poland money.
