Freiburg scores 6 goals in first half to destroy Gladbach

Berlin, Dec. 5 (BNA): Freiburg produced a devastating first-half performance to beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 6-0 away on Sunday to claim their biggest win in the Bundesliga.

There were six different scorers as it all worked out in the first 45 minutes for Freiburg, which finished off a three-game losing streak in style to move up to fourth, according to the Associated Press.

Freiburg had not beaten Gladbach away in the Bundesliga in 17 attempts since a 2-1 singles win in 1995, and faced a tough prospect with Gladbach hoping to make up for their 4-1 loss in Cologne in last weekend’s Rhine derby.

But Freiburg did not pay attention to the statistics as Maximilian Eggstein opened the scoring in the second minute, Kevin Shady added another goal two minutes later, and Philipp Lienhardt scored 3-0 in the 12th minute.

Nicholas Hoeffler scored the fourth goal in the 19th minute, six minutes before Lucas Hoeffler made the fifth goal.

It was the first time since Gladbach’s 10-0 victory over Eintracht Braunschweig in 1984 that any team scored five goals in the first 25 minutes. No team has ever done this away from home before.

Gladbach coach Adi Hütter responded with two substitutions for nearly half an hour, but that didn’t change his team’s luck.

Freiburg goalkeeper Mark Flecken saved any danger from Marcus Thuram and Denis Zakaria before Vincenzo Griveaux made the sixth goal for Nico Schlutterbeek in the 37th minute.

Hütter looked dumbfounded on the sideline, while Gladbach sporting director Max Eberl sat with his head bowed, staring at the ground.

Freiburg coach Christian Streiche returned to Gladbach’s substitute Brielle Embolo in the first half. Empolo gave way to Lars Stendel in the last 20 minutes but there was no way back for Gladbach.
