Flooding in Afghanistan, Pakistan kills dozens as heavy monsoon rains lash the region

Officials in the Pakistani city of Quetta said on July 10 (BNA) that massive floods have killed dozens and displaced hundreds of people in Pakistan after monsoon rains swept the country.

In the southern province of Balochistan, 57 people, including women and children, were killed after they were swept away by flood waters, according to Ziaullah Langov, advisor on disaster and home affairs to the provincial chief minister, adding that eight dams have exploded due to heavy rains, according to Reuters.

Hundreds of others have become homeless after their homes collapsed due to rain and floods, he said, adding that the monsoon rains are continuing.

In northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, two people, including a six-year-old child, were killed and four injured when their house collapsed due to rain, according to an official statement in the region.

Heavy rains have swept the country in recent days, leaving swathes of Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city, underwater.

A spokesman for the disaster management agency said on Friday that 24 people were killed in floods in the east and south of the country in neighboring Afghanistan.

The Pakistan Navy said it was joining efforts to evacuate citizens and deliver rations and fresh water to Balochistan.

In 2010, the worst floods in memory affected 20 million people in Pakistan, with infrastructure damage reaching billions of dollars and devastating swaths of crops as a fifth of the country was inundated.
