Flames beat Avs 5-3 to win opener for first time since 2009

Washington, Oct. 14 (BNA) – Dillon Dobby scored with a short kick and the Calgary Flames won their season opener for the first time since 2009, defeating Stanley Cup defending champion Colorado Avalanche 5-3 on Thursday night.

Doby and Rasmus Anderson scored in the second half, and Elias Lindholm and Tyler Toffoli scored two goals, playing power in the third half, as Brett Ritchie scored.

Jacob Markstrom saved 22 saves to help Flames finish 0-10-2 in the holes, according to The Associated Press.

Defenseman MacKenzie Weegar had a pair of passes. Join Calgary’s other off-season acquisitions – Jonathan Huberdeau, Nazem Kadri and Kevin Rooney – in making his regular season debut with The Flames.

Kadri, who got help, signed as a free agent with Calgary in August after three seasons with Colorado.

Bowen Byram, Nathan McKinnon and Valerie Neshochkin scored for Colorado, and Pavel Francoz stopped 22 shots. Avalanche opened at home on Wednesday night with a 5-2 victory over Chicago.
