Fire-stricken ferry due back in Swedish port

Stockholm, Aug. 30 (BNA) The Swedish Maritime Administration said the ferry is scheduled to return to the Swedish port of Nynashamn after a fire on the roof of the vehicle caused a temporary power outage.

The fire broke out in a refrigerated container at midday Monday north of the island of Gotland as Stena Skandia was heading to Ventspils, Latvia, from Nynashamn.

The fire was put out on Monday afternoon.

The agency added that there were no reports of injuries between 241 passengers and 58 crew members on board.

“It is moving at a limited speed and is expected to arrive at the port mid-morning on Tuesday,” the authority said in a statement late on Monday.

The ferry, which suffered a power outage after the fire, began to drift towards Gotland, causing authorities to begin evacuating some passengers. However, the ship was able to restart its engines and the evacuation was halted.

At 0515 GMT the ship was heading toward Nynashamn at 4.7 knots (8.7 kilometers) per hour, according to ship-tracking website Marine Traffic.

A technical investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the fire.
