Cape Town Jan 2 (BNA): A fire broke out in South Africa’s parliament on Sunday, with flames erupting from a rooftop and a column of smoke that could be seen from miles away, but authorities said several hours later and Reuters reported that firefighters had taken control of the area. Situation.
Several hours after the fire broke out in the legislative capital Cape Town, smoke was still rising from one of the many buildings that make up the Parliament Complex.
Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Patricia De Lille told reporters that the fire was under control. She said it is currently burning in the National Assembly Hall, but has been contained in other parts.
De Lille said there were no reports of injuries in the fire.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
Jean-Pierre Smith, the Cape Town municipal committee member responsible for safety and security, said initial reports indicated that the fire started in an office and spread towards the gym.
Thick smoke rose from the roof of the building and from the entrance, while emergency services sprayed water inside.
