Federer’s coach says it is unlikely he plays Wimbledon

Bern, March 5 / BNA / A Swiss newspaper quoted his Swiss coach Severin Luthi that Roger Federer is unlikely to play Wimbledon this year as the Swiss player continues to recover from knee surgery.

The eight-time champion’s last match was at Wimbledon last year, where he fell in the quarter-finals and then announced he would have knee surgery for the third time in two years.

“At the moment, I don’t envision him playing Wimbledon,” Luthi was quoted as saying by The Independent.

He said, “I’m not someone who says it’s impossible. But I can’t imagine it now.”

“It’s still in the rehab phase. Not only does the knee and leg muscles have to be built, the whole body has to be strengthened. It’s a complete conditioning program.”

When Federer announced his decision to undergo surgery, the 40-year-old and 20-times Grand Slam champion admitted that returning to the ATP Tour would be a challenge.

“I want to give myself a glimmer of hope to get back into the Tour in some form or form,” Federer said in a video at the time.

“I’m realistic, don’t get me wrong. I know how difficult it is to have another surgery and try it at this age, but I want to be healthy.”
