F1 Powered by Solar: Bahrain exceeds target to offset Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix emissions

Manama, March 19 (BNA) The Bahrain International Circuit today announced the completion of a major solar project that fulfills Bahrain’s 2021 commitment to making the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix green by 2022.

This exciting project covers more than the energy requirements of the Formula 1 weekend, with a surplus excess, reduces the carbon footprint of the venue, generates significant savings in energy costs and supports Bahrain’s commitment to sustainability and the Kingdom’s zero-zero ambitions.

The new on-site solar energy production facility will support Formula 1’s plan to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2030. Other phases of the project will see the annual energy needs of the Bahrain International Circuit being met sustainably and entirely from renewable sources.

“The rapid completion of the first phase of the solar energy transition at the Bahrain International Circuit is a significant milestone in F1’s goal to be carbon neutral by 2030, and in the Kingdom of Bahrain’s net zero ambitions,” BIC CEO Sheikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa said.

“In the coming months we will continue to advance a number of exciting initiatives focused on increasing our energy and water efficiency, as well as developing opportunities to expand our solar production.”

Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali said:

“This is another very important moment in our plans to achieve net zero carbon emissions as a sport by 2030 and it shows once again the vision and speed of action that our experienced promoter here in Bahrain. It is fantastic that the energy requirements of the entire race weekend are covered with solar energy and shows what we can do As a sporting community to make a positive contribution to reducing emissions and carbon emissions.”
