Cape Town, June 13 (BNA): Formula 1 chief Stefano Domenicali arrived in South Africa on Monday for talks about organizing a race in the country early next year, the Associated Press reported.
Domenicali is expected to meet representatives of the Kyalami circuit near Johannesburg with the aim of reaching an agreement on adding a South African race to the 2023 schedule.
The person said no final agreement had been reached yet, but the plan was to hold the Grand Prix in South Africa next year.
The person said Domenicali traveled to South Africa after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Sunday. South Africa hosted the last F1 race in 1993.
Africa is the only continent except Antarctica that does not have a race in the current timeline.
If South Africa is added, it will be the second new race of 2023, with Las Vegas already set to join next year.
The South African Grand Prix was held for 25 years from 1960 to 1985 – mostly in Kyalami – before F1 left South Africa due to apartheid.
She returned for two races at Kyalami in 1992 and 1993 after Nelson Mandela was released from prison.
A return to South Africa has been on F1’s radar for some time, and a South African consortium tried to bring street racing to Cape Town 10 years ago.
Kyalami is seen as a safer bet for F1 due to its history of hosting the South African Grand Prix.
