Erling Haaland is leaving soccer’s greatest in his wake

Erling Haaland leaves football’s greatest player in his wake<br />

London March 14 (U.S.): It’s been a relatively lean period for Erling Haaland. That was before he scored a record five goals in a Champions League match when Manchester City beat Leipzig 7-0, reports the Associated Press.

Haaland has scored just three goals in his previous nine games – his worst performance this season – but he now hits 39 in 35 competitive matches since joining City last year.

That number would have been higher had it not been for Pep Guardiola’s decision to substitute him just after the hour mark against Leipzig, with a place in the quarter-finals essentially guaranteed.

In doing so, he denied City manager Haaland the opportunity to set a record in European club football’s elite competition and surpassed even the great Lionel Messi as the only player to score six goals in a single match. Luis Adriano also scored five goals.

“If he achieves this feat in 22, 23, his life will be boring,” Guardiola joked afterwards. “He will not have a target to reach in the future.”

At this rate, it seems only a matter of time before the next record crashes.
On Tuesday, Haaland became the fastest player to score 30 goals in the Champions League, beating the record set by former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy.
