England beat Brazil on penalties to win Finalissima trophy

Manama, April 7 (BNA): England beat Brazil on penalties in the thrilling Women’s Final, the second successive international tournament the Lionesses have lifted at a packed Wembley Stadium.

Drawn 1-1 at full time, lioness Sarina Wiegmann beat Brazil 4-2 in a penalty shootout to improve their unbeaten streak to 30 matches, with Chloe Kelly hitting the decisive penalty, reports Reuters.

The match, which drew 83,132 sold-out spectators in early October, featured the European and South American champions and was a key part of preparations for the Women’s World Cup in July and August.

Ella Tone scored her 16th goal for England in the 23rd minute when Lucy Bronze clipped the ball to her teammate to shoot from the edge of the six-yard box.

Andressa Alves sent the game to penalties when she equalized in the 93rd minute after bouncing on a loose ball that goalkeeper Marie Erbes struggled to control.

England dominated the first half and thought they had led 2-0 through a confident volley from Lauren James before the break, but there was an offside in the build-up.

Brazil looked the better team after the restart, Jess Erbes quickly called to action before Kerolin bouncing in the direction of the England keeper, while Leah Williamson’s applause halted a steady surge of visitors.

The match, initially hailed by the late Pele, went to penalties as Tamiris and Brazil captain Rafael, who hit the crossbar, failed to score for the visitors.

Wiegmann’s side will look to extend that streak when they host Australia at the Geteck Stadium in Brentford, while Brazil take on Germany on Tuesday in Nuremberg.
