Emmy Awards air Sept. 12; nominees to be announced in July

LOS ANGELES, APRIL 7 (US): The 74th Primetime Emmy Awards will take place on September 12th, broadcast live on NBC.

The Television Academy and Network announced Wednesday that the nominations for Best Television Show will be announced on July 12. The ceremony’s host, producers, and other details will be announced at a later time, according to the Associated Press.

The Emmys will take place on a Monday, not the usual Sunday, due to “NBC Sunday Night Football.”

Last year’s party, hosted by Cedric the Entertainer on CBS, had a limited audience from in-person theater due to COVID-19 concerns. But he was closer to business as usual after the largely virtual event in 2020 on ABC with host Jimmy Kimmel.

The Emmys rotate between major broadcast networks, including Fox, although the same awards have increasingly gone to cable and, more recently, to streaming services as well.

The 2021 Emmys attracted more than 7.4 million viewers, a turnaround after viewership dropped all-time to just under 6.4 million in 2020. Ratings for award ceremonies have generally declined over the years, except for the pandemic.
