Egypt, Norway to work together on clean energy projects

Cairo, March 31 (BNA) Today, Thursday, Egypt and Norway signed an agreement for a number of projects to enhance their cooperation in the field of renewable energy development.

Egypt is racing to launch environmentally friendly projects in the run-up to the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh in November, according to the Associated Press.

“The excellent relations between our two countries are broad,” Norwegian Foreign Minister Anken Hoetfeldt said in a press conference held in Cairo with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry.

She added, “They have become broader in scope today with the signing of agreements between the Egyptian government and the Norwegian company Scatec for Renewable Energy.”

Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly attended the signing ceremony between representatives of the Egyptian Sovereign Fund, Norway’s Norfund and the leading Norwegian producer of renewable energy, Scatec, according to a cabinet statement.

The agreement provides for projects to produce renewable energy, green hydrogen, and build green infrastructure in African countries.

“African countries are particularly vulnerable to climate change, and it is positive that Egypt has taken on the responsibility of leading this year’s climate summit,” Heutfeldt said on Wednesday before arriving in Cairo.

Earlier this month, Egypt signed a $5 billion memorandum of understanding with Scatec to set up a plant in the Suez Canal region to produce green ammonia from green hydrogen.

The government said the plant, which is due to come online in 2025, is expected to produce one ton of green ammonia annually, with the potential to expand to three tons.

Shoukry said that Norwegian companies are keen to strengthen their presence in Egypt. “We can benefit from their expertise and performance in sectors that are really important to Egypt such as desalination, renewable energy and green hydrogen.”
