Education Ministry unveils new rules for academic degree verification

Manama, Nov. 27 (BNA): The Ministry of Education announced the start of implementing new mechanisms to verify university degrees and academic qualifications from Bahrain and abroad. The new measures were approved by the Council of Ministers headed by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister.

“Procedures for examining certificates have been simplified without referring them to the National Committee for Qualifications Assessment or the Higher Education Council for assessment,” said Minister of Education Dr. Muhammad bin Mubarak Juma.

Details of the updated academic qualification verification procedures are available on the National Portal website (Bahrain.bh), including clarifications on the update process, as well as contact numbers designated to respond to questions and inquiries during official working hours.

Dr. Juma stressed that the new step will simplify employment procedures in the public and private sectors by reducing the waiting time for processing the service. The National Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA) and the Council to Regulate the Practice of Engineering Professions (CRPEP) will supervise medical and engineering certifications.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments will examine the legal qualifications for licensing law firms. Holders of other degrees awarded by local public and private universities can directly apply for government jobs through the Civil Service Bureau (CSB) without submitting a certificate or statement of equivalence.

The minister explained that the Civil Service Bureau will then verify the validity of the qualifications after passing the employment requirements. The verification process is not mandatory for private sector employers. However, employers may continue to verify qualifications with the help of specialized companies accredited by the Ministry of Education, if the qualifications were obtained from overseas universities.

The degree can also be obtained directly from the university if the qualification is issued by local academic institutions.

The Council of Higher Education authorized local universities to certify academic certificates for graduates without the need to refer to the General Secretariat of the Supreme Elections Committee.

For graduate master’s and doctoral degrees, employers or private sector organizations can carry out certification verification through specialized companies recommended by the Ministry of Education if they wish.

As for public sector employees, the Civil Service Bureau will review qualifications, while awarding certificates for depositing theses and dissertations in national public libraries affiliated with the Ministry of Education.
