Durant scores 32, Nets hit 22 3s in 117-108 win over Hawks

NEW YORK, NOV 4 (BUS): Kevin Durant scored 32 points and led the game-opening spur late in the third quarter, as the Brooklyn Nets beat the Atlanta Hawks 117-108 on Wednesday night for their third straight win.

Durant scored 13 points in the 20-4 series to end the third game that turned the tie game into a 16-point lead for the Nets to finish fourth. He added that he added seven rebounds and five assists overall.

Joe Harris made six three-pointers and scored 18 points, James Harden scored 16 points and 11 assists, and finished the Nets 4-2 at home.

DeAndre Hunter made all six three-pointers and scored 26 points for the Hawks. Tre Young scored 21 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds, but only shot 6 for 22.

After a slow start to the season, the Nets are starting to look like the team they were so strong last season. They hit a franchise record of 65.3% in a 117-91 defeat in Detroit on Sunday and followed that up by notching 22 three-pointers on Wednesday, their most since their best franchise hit last February 27 in Sacramento.

Durant cut the tie 75 with a pair of free throws leaving 4:40 in the third, then added another basket and 3 to make seven points.

Then, up by four, the Nets scored their last 12 points in the third quarter. Durant finished it with a No. 3 just before the bell to send Brooklyn to fourth with a 95-79 cushion.

The Nets won for the first time this season when they lost, as the Hawks finished 52-42 behind 16 from Clint Capella and 12 from John Collins. Brooklyn was 0-3 when he lost the fight on the boards.

The Nets opened a 10-point lead early in the second quarter, but the Hawks rallied to lead late in the period ahead of Harden’s lone basket of the half, a 3-pointer 3-pointer with 3.1 seconds left, giving Brooklyn a 61-59 advantage.

Hints

Hawks: Reserve guard Lou Williams appeared in his 1072nd game, and tied with Michael Jordan and Marvin Williams for 92nd place on the NBA list. … Steve Holman, the radio host for the Hawks who has never missed a game in his 37 seasons, will be inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in February.

Nets: Patty Mills scored 14 points. … The Nets wore their city blue uniform for the first time this season, and they looked like the New Jersey Nets before they moved to Brooklyn and changed their colors to black.

Availability of IRVING

Coach Steve Nash was asked if Kyrie Irving would be allowed to join the Nets if New York City Mayor-elect Eric Adams changed the local vaccine mandate, even if Irving had not been vaccinated against COVID-19.

“I may be speaking informally, but I think if the mandate changes it will certainly be welcomed again,” Nash said.

Adams will take office on January 1. Currently, players on professional teams in New York must be vaccinated to play games in the city’s public spaces. The Nets could have allowed Irving to train and play in the road games, but instead told him to stay away from the team.

Talking Baseball

Hawks coach Nate McMillan opened his pre-game press conference by congratulating the Atlanta Braves, who won the world championship with a 7-0 victory over the Houston Astros on Tuesday night in Game Six.

“I mean, just a great nine-round baseball game last night,” MacMillan said.

The Falcons said they plan to honor the Braves in their home game on Thursday, with some players and team officials expected to attend.
