Dubai Expo 2020: Bahrain’s pavilion, an opportunity for new symbiotic physical space, innovation relationship

Dubai, December 26 (BNA) In the midst of the huge, sprawling Dubai Expo 2020, the Bahrain Pavilion stands out, reflecting a large number of cultural expressions in the Kingdom and the symbiotic relationship between physical space and innovation.

Located on Sunset Avenue in the Opportunity District and with a large white and red flag firmly attached in front of it, the suite shines with its splendor, with its aluminum exterior which is one of Bahrain’s main exports, and it is charming with its beauty. Unique rectangular shape with a height of 24 meters.

It explores the topic of intensity as an enabler of opportunity through an immersive visitor experience.

Visitors enter it through a ramp “intended to be a transition point between the external world of the gallery and the internal world.”

The pavilion with its 900 square meters of open exhibition space is designed as a physical and spatial experience of density and the future possibilities of building in an increasingly dense world, according to the pavilion’s introduction.

“Designed by Christian Kerez Zürich AG, it is envisioned as an open space, submerged in the site and accessible through a ramp that creates a transition between the exterior and interior world of the pavilion.”

Once inside, visitors are accustomed to the columns and beams that cross the architectural space horizontally and vertically following the boundaries closely, amazed at how the columns spread here in all directions.

The structure of this central space consists of 126 columns that are 11 cm in diameter and 24 m high and are connected to each other at several points along the height of the space.

“Columns support each other and support the ceiling, providing a lattice structure that illustrates principles of connection and density in an exploration of three-dimensional possibilities inspired by the geometric stucco decorations of traditional Bahraini architecture.

“The visitor experiences the space as if walking through a dense forest where the pavilion’s exhibition and program openly coexist with the space’s architecture. The columns are made of steel, while the exterior is made of aluminium, representing one of Bahrain’s biggest exports. At the end of the six months, the pavilion will be dismantled. completely and permanently rebuilt in Bahrain.”

This central space houses the main exhibition space, gift shop, and café located loosely between the building’s columns, forming the physical experience of density in the pavilion.

The pavilion, one of 192 countries participating in Dubai Expo 2020, welcomes visitors from all over the world who are driven by a strong sense of excitement and enthusiasm as they live a unique experience of “Connecting Minds and Creating the Future”.

They represent the moving United Nations, uniting the world away from wars, conflicts, politics and divisions.

It is clear that Dubai was a gracious and agile host, who dedicated money and energy and mobilized thousands of people, professionals and volunteers, to make the event, a truly global engine of innovation and inspiration, one of the most, if not the most successful, exhibition ever.

Expo 2020 Dubai spokeswoman Maha Al Gergawi said the huge participation “not only makes this Expo more international, but also makes it more inclusive”.

“Expo 2020’s mission is to provide a global platform for cross-cultural inoculation,” she said.
