Debutant Amos Kipruto of Kenya wins London Marathon

London, Oct. 2 (BNA) Newcomer Amos Kipruto won the men’s race at Sunday’s London Marathon, with Yalmzer Yohualo winning the women’s race.

Kipruto, the 2019 world bronze medalist in Doha, finished with a time of 2 hours 4 minutes 39 seconds. The 30-year-old Kenyan beat Lyul Gebrselassie of Ethiopia to take second place, while Belgium’s Bashir Abdi finished third.

Yehualaw recovered from her fall to win the women’s race. The 23-year-old looked like he was going on a speed bump with 6 miles remaining, but recovered to join the leading group and went home in 2:17:25, the third-fastest time in the event.

Kenyan defending champion Joycelyn Gipkosgei was forced to settle for second place. This year’s race was held in October for the third and final time, having moved in 2020 due to COVID-19.

Yehualaw’s victory came just six months after her debut at the distance. She is the youngest champion of the London Marathon.
