Death toll in Kentucky hits 26 amid renewed flood threat

WASHINGTON, July 31 (BNA) The death toll from severe flooding in Kentucky rose to 26 on Sunday, with dozens still missing amid the threat of more torrential rains.

Kentucky Governor Andy Bashir said the death toll rose by one since Saturday due to last week’s storms, according to the Associated Press.

Bashir said the number will likely rise significantly and it may take weeks to find all the victims.

According to a daily briefing from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, as many as 37 people are missing.

Moreover, more flash floods could have occurred in parts of Appalachia on Sunday and Monday as the latest storms rolled in, the National Weather Service said. Precipitation rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour were possible in some of the same areas that were inundated last week.
