Cyclone in Peru causes major flooding, at least six dead

Lima, March 12 (BNA): At least six people were killed in Peru over the past few days as a powerful hurricane caused torrential rains that destroyed hundreds of homes and caused major unrest in the northern regions of the Latin American country.

The government has declared a state of emergency as it seeks to provide relief to regions of Peru hard hit by Hurricane Yaku, which include Lambayeque, Piura and Tumbes, Reuters reported.

Early Friday, the National Institute of Civil Defense (INDISI) said floods caused by Yakou had claimed six lives.

Andesi later said 58 people had been killed since the start of the rainy season, which began a few months ago. He did not provide a specific time frame for the victims.

Peru has been plagued by instability and anti-government protests over the past few months since Congress removed former President Pedro Castillo from power in December.

His replacement, President Dina Boulwart, visited parts of northern Peru on Saturday as the government provided humanitarian aid to areas hard hit by the typhoon.
