Berlin, Jan. 18 (BUS): Business executives and security experts around the world see cyber attacks as the biggest threat to businesses, according to a global survey.
In a “risk scale” published on Tuesday by AGCS, the industry insurer of insurance giant Allianz, criminal hackers were ranked as the biggest risk.
The AGCS said business interruptions, natural disasters, and epidemics track in places 2 through 4.
The German news agency (dpa) said the company conducted a total survey of 2,650 professionals in 89 countries last fall.
This included more than 1,200 CEOs from large companies with annual sales of more than $500 million, including Allianz experts.
The company has learned that even very good IT security precautions do not protect one hundred percent from hacker attacks.
“Companies are investing a lot of money in the further development of IT security, but we are still discovering that attackers can get through and sometimes cause significant damage to businesses,” said AGCS Director Jens Krekahn.
The Allianz survey is consistent with other cybercrime analytics. The US company Cybersecurity Ventures, which is often cited in the IT industry, estimates that the global damage from cybercrime reached $6 trillion last year.
By 2025, this could rise to $10.5 trillion. This amount includes data theft and corruption, financial crimes, lost productivity, intellectual property theft, and other crimes, as well as the cost of repairing the damage.
According to German energy company Eon, the energy sector is increasingly vulnerable.
“The risk of cyber attacks on the system will increase,” Eon CEO Leonard Birnbaum said at the Handelsblatt Energy Summit in Berlin on Tuesday. He said he was following the matter “with great concern”.
