Cuba says US greenlights MLB players for World Baseball Classic

Havana, Dec. 25 (BNA): Cuba said that the United States has granted permission for some senior ball players to participate in the World Baseball Classic on the national team.

Juan Reynaldo Perez Pardo, president of the Cuban Baseball Federation, said in a statement that the organizers of the event scheduled for March have received a license allowing Cubans who currently play in the major leagues or are residents of the United States to join the Cuban team. .

“This is a positive step, but it must be said that it is the only just solution,” Perez Pardo said.

He added that the team list will be announced when the details of the American license are available.

The team will be the first since the 1959 revolution, Fidel Castro, to include Cuban players from both countries.

Talented Cuban footballers led the country to gold medals at the Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992, Atlanta in 1996 and Athens in 2004, but in Tokyo in 2020 the country failed for the first time to qualify for the Games.

Cuba is expected to play its first match of the Classics in Taiwan on March 8.
