Conte says Tottenham lack experience but wants to stay and help club

Tottenham Hotspur coach Antonio Conte said that Tottenham Hotspur squandered a two-goal lead in their 4-2 loss to Manchester City in the English Premier League on Thursday due to the lack of experience in the team. He remained committed to the club for the long term.

“You’ll never lose this kind of game with more experience,” said Conte after Julian Alvarez and Erling Haaland’s second-half goals as well as a brace from Riyad Mahrez, obliterating his team, which was led by Dejan Kulusevski and Emerson Royal.

“You don’t buy experience. Well… you can buy experience. But we have to buy experience step by step, year after year. We conceded a lot of goals, it’s not good when we concede four goals in the half.

“It’s the first time my team has conceded so many goals in the first half, but you know we have to keep working, improving and trying to do our best. We were really disappointed with the result, and we deserved more in the end.”

Last season Conte helped revive Spurs from a poor start under predecessor Nuno Espirito Santo to finish in the top four, but his first full season has proven a struggle, with his side losing six of their last 10 Premier League matches.

Conte also suffered personal pain recently with the death of three of his close friends, who are fitness coach Gian Piero Ventroni and former players Sinisa Mihajlovic and Gianluca Vialli, although he said that these losses did not affect his work as a coach for Tottenham.

“Personally, it’s a tough season, but this situation doesn’t affect the team’s work and I’m really focused on this aspect, I’m an animal,” he said.

“I know what my task is in my situation, I work hard because I want to improve the team, I want to improve the club with my vision, with my ideas.

“I know the job is to be part of that process to try to improve a team that’s in transition, to try to build a solid foundation and a team that’s ready to fight for the win.”
