Collins advances to Australian Open semifinals

Melbourne, Jan. 26 (BUS): Danielle Collins swung the match in her favour, with a key break in the final game of the opening set en route to a 7-5 6-1 quarter-final victory over Alize Cornet.

The 28-year-old American, Adela, had her previous best performance at Melbourne Park — and also advanced to the semi-finals in 2019, the Associated Press reports.

The loss ended a solid run by Cornet, who played her first Grand Slam quarter-final in her main draw 63rd appearance. The Frenchman scored a surprise win over two-time champion Simona Halep n in the fourth round. The WTA says Cornet should return to the top 50 in the rankings because of her performance here.

Collins will play the next quarter-final winner at Rod Laver Arena between former French Open champion Iga Swiatek and Kai Kanepi.

Collins is the second American in the semi-finals. Madison Keys will play other ranked Ash Party.

Collins underwent surgery last year to treat endometriosis, which left her in excruciating pain during last year’s tournaments.

“It’s an incredible feeling, especially after some of the health challenges I’ve been through,” Collins said in her post-game interview.

“To be able to get back to that level and be as competitive as I was and be able to be physically like I wasn’t as rewarding.”
