Manama, Nov 4 (BNA): Tears pooled in Coco Gauff’s eyes as she sat on the sidelines of the WTA Finals during Thursday night’s changeover after she gave a lead in what would become a 7-6 (6), 6-3 round-robin loss to Daria Kasatkina who ended the 18-year-old American’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals.
Gauff, seeded No. 4, slipped to 0-4 on her first appearance in the season-ending WTA tournament – 0-2 in singles and 0-2 in doubles with Jessica Pegula.
Floridian was the youngest participant in both WTA Finals events since Anna Kournikova in 1999, according to the Associated Press.
“I had a lot of chances. I didn’t play my best tennis today, but there is a lot to take advantage of, a lot to learn from, and I hope to do better next time,” said Gauff.
“In both (singles) matches, I had chances. I think I made a lot of unintentional mistakes,” she said. “So I think that is something I have to clean up.”
Earlier on Thursday, seed Iga Swiatek beat Caroline Garcia 6-3 6-2 by dominating by eight points at the end of the match as she snatched nine from 11 matches.
Swiatek has won all four sets she has played so far while losing a total of only 10 matches.
