China local symptomatic COVID cases rise for 4th day

BEIJING, Dec. 28 (BNA): China’s domestic coronavirus cases rose for a fourth consecutive day on Monday, as the city of Xi’an reported more infections in an outbreak that has put 13 million residents under lockdown.

Official data on Tuesday showed Xian reported 175 asymptomatic cases, up from 150 the day before.

So far, no omicron infections have been announced from the 810 confirmed cases in Xian from December 9 to Monday. China has reported a small number of Omicron infections among international travelers and in its south.

Nationwide, mainland China detected 182 local asymptomatic cases on Monday, according to a statement from the National Health Commission, compared to 162 the previous day and marking the fourth consecutive day of increase.

The local asymptomatic caseload on Monday also represented the highest daily number since the official daily bulletin began separately classifying asymptomatic carriers at the end of March last year.

Case numbers in Xi’an and China are small compared to many clusters in other countries, but officials have imposed strict restrictions on travel within the city and on its departure, in line with national guidelines to immediately contain the outbreak.

Reuters reported that since last week, residents of Xian have not been allowed to leave the city without permission from their employer or authorities.

Officials imposed restrictions on allowing people to go out for essential shopping during a new round of mass testing that began Monday, and banned non-essential vehicles from the roads.

No new deaths were recorded on Monday, bringing the country’s death toll to 4,636. Mainland China had 101,486 confirmed cases of symptoms as of the end of December 27, including domestic cases and those coming from abroad.
