China issues blizzard alert in first Beijing snowfall of Olympics

Beijing, Feb. 13 (BNA): The China Meteorological Administration issued a blizzard warning on Sunday saying that significant snowfall is expected in large parts of northern China including Beijing, the capital and current site of the Winter Olympics.

Government notifications said the weekend snowfall, which already began in some areas on Saturday, is the first in the capital since the Winter Olympics opened on February 4.

A notice on the Beijing 2022 official website said the women’s downhill swimming qualifiers at Friske in Zhangjiakou, which featured China’s team gold medalist Elaine Gu, were rescheduled for later Sunday due to snowfall.

Authorities issued a blue snow storm warning, the lowest of the country’s four alerts, with some areas expected to receive up to 4 cm (1.6 in) of snow. They advised the public to cut back on non-essential outdoor activities.

Heavy snow is expected in parts of central and southern Inner Mongolia, northern Shanxi, central and northern Hebei, northern Beijing, southern Tianjin, eastern and southern Liaoning, and Xinjiang along the Tianshan Mountains today. Management notice said.

Temperatures dropped in Beijing, with the Beijing Meteorological Observatory predicting a minimum temperature of -6 degrees Celsius (21 degrees Fahrenheit).
