China and Russia veto new UN sanctions on North Korea

New York, May 27 (BNA): China and Russia vetoed a United Nations resolution sponsored by the United States on Thursday that would have imposed tough new sanctions on North Korea over its series of launches of intercontinental ballistic missiles that can be used to launch nuclear weapons.

The vote in the 15-member Security Council was 13-2, the first serious split among the five permanent members who hold veto power in the United Nations’ strongest body over the North Korea sanctions resolution.

A unified Security Council imposed sanctions after North Korea’s first nuclear test in 2006 and hardened them over the years in a total of 10 resolutions that seek – so far unsuccessfully – to rein in its nuclear and ballistic missile programs and halt funding.
