St. Petersburg, December 8 (BNA): Chelsea conceded a goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time to draw 3-3 at Zenit St. Petersburg and drop to second place in their Champions League group behind Juventus on Wednesday. AP said.
Juventus started the last round of group matches with Chelsea on points and beat Malmo 1-0 in a match played at the same time. A second-place finish would mean group winners Chelsea would play in the last 16 and would likely give the defending champions an even tougher task to advance.
Magomed Ozdov earned Zenit a point with a powerful, rising shot from inside the area, just when Timo Werner’s second goal of the night – in the 85th minute – seemed to lead Chelsea to victory.
Zenit had already secured a third place and a place in the European League knockout qualifiers to reach the right in the last 16 of the second-tier competition.
Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has provided a weak squad with his side guaranteed to advance, but still includes what is widely seen as a first-choice strike partnership for Werner and Romelu Lukaku, both of whom have recently returned to fitness after injury. They combined to score all goals for Chelsea, who were 2-1 down before the last half hour.
