CAS asked to judge Ecuador case by 10 days before World Cup

Lausanne, September 30 (BUS) – The Supreme Court of Sport has been asked to rule on a case aimed at removing Ecuador from the World Cup no later than November 10 – just 10 days before the hosts face Qatar in the opening match. .

The Court of Arbitration for Sport said it had registered appeals by the Chilean and Peruvian football federations against a FIFA ruling this month that Ecuadorian defender Byron Castillo was in fact eligible to play in the eight qualifying matches for which he was selected, the Associated Press (AP) reported.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport did not set a timetable for appointing the judges and organizing a hearing, although it said both parties had requested the final ruling by November 10.

Chilean officials claim they have documents proving that Castillo is in fact Colombian and that Ecuador must lose all eight matches he played in a 3-0 loss.

This legal argument was rejected by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee in June and the FIFA appeal judges upheld it two weeks ago.

Ecuador finished fourth in the South American qualifying group in March and secured a direct entry to the World Cup. Days later, she was drawn into Group A with Qatar – where she will play the host nation on November 20 in Doha – the Netherlands and Senegal.

If they lose the qualifying matches, the adjusted points score will lift Chile to fourth from seventh.

Peru finished fifth and asked CAS to enter Ecuador as the second best team in South America. Peru already lost an Intercontinental playoff to Australia in June.
