Carreno Busta high on confidence after claiming maiden Masters 1000 title

Montreal, Aug. 15 (BNA) – Pablo Carreno Busta said winning the biggest title of his career at the Canadian Masters on Sunday gave him a boost in confidence for the remainder of the season.

The unseeded Spaniard beat Hubert Hurkacz 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 to win the ATP 1000 tournament in Montreal, which is part of the US Open leading up to this year’s Grand Slam final, Reuters reports.

“Not only at the US Open, but it’s very important in the rest of the season,” Carino Busta, who reached the semi-finals at the US Open in 2017 and 2020, told reporters.

“I won 1000 points. I won a cup, a very important cup. My game during the week was very, very high. I played really well from the first match against (Matteo) Berrettini until the last against Hubie.

“I think I just need to keep going like this, believe in myself, be aggressive, and for sure I’ll have the chances of winning matches this season and hopefully in the next games as well.”

The 31-year-old said his long wait to win his first Masters title did not affect his shoulders, pointing to compatriot David Ferrer, who finished third but won only one Masters title.

“I know it’s not easy to win this kind of title,” Carreno Busta said. “Not everyone has a Masters 1000 in their career. For example, Ferrer was ranked third in the world and just won once.

“I know it’s very difficult to win a title. It wasn’t extra pressure to get that title. But it’s true that now I have it and I’m going to enjoy it, right?”

The main draw for the US Open begins on August 29.
