Cal Raleigh’s RBI single in 10th lifts Mariners past Yankees, 1-0

SEATTLE June 1 (BNA): Cal Raleigh lined up a single to right to score Jose Caballero from second base in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Seattle Mariners beat the visiting New York Yankees 1-0 on Wednesday night.

Raleigh’s hitting lead over Ron Marinaccio (2-2) helped Seattle salvage a three-game series finale after losing 10-4, 10-2, Reuters reports.

Mariners reliever Justin Topa (1-2) came off a bases-loaded jam in the top of the tenth. With Oswaldo Cabrera serving as the runner on second to start the inning, DJ LeMahieu reached on an error by shortstop JP Crawford, with Cabrera advancing to third. After Isiah Kiner-Falefa fouled off third baseman Eugenio Suarez, he walked Jake Bauers to fill in the bases. Tupa pushed Anthony Volpe to third, with the Mariners getting power at the plate, and hitter Franchie Cordero hit a 3-2 pitch to end the threat.

Both starting pitchers, right-handers who were formerly first-round draft picks, have had scoreless outings.

First time facing the Yankees, Seattle native George Kirby pitched eight scoreless innings. He delivered three batters, did not walk a batter, and struck out seven.

New York’s Clark Schmidt allowed three hits in 5 1/2 innings, with one walk and seven strikeouts.

Neither team had a baserunner until Seattle’s Colten Wong walked two outs into third. Crawford lined up with a single to the right to send Wong to third, but got stranded there as Ty France trailed to second to end the inning.

With one out in the sixth, the Yankees’ Kyle Higashioka lined up with a single to left and took second on Greg Allen’s sacrifice bunt. Shortstop Crawford caught a jump ball on a liner hit by Gleyber Torres to end the inning, preventing Higashioka from scoring.

Julio Rodriguez blocked a single to right with two outs in the bottom of the inning, ending Schmidt’s night. Wandy Peralta came on to hit Jared Kelenic to keep it scoreless heading into the seventh.

Suarez drove in the bottom of the seventh with a double right. Peralta made a rally batting back to the mound, striking out Teoscar Hernandez and pinch-hitting AJ Pollock to third to get out of a jam.
