Briton Wightman takes surprise 1,500m gold with dad commentating

Eugene, Oregon, July 20 (BUS): Britain’s Jake Whiteman won an impressive gold in the world 1500m championships as he beat Olympic champion and favorite Jacob Ingbrigtsen on the last lap on Tuesday, as his proud father Jeff saw it as his home as a playground. Announcer.

Wittmann’s father and coach, accustomed to collecting hitherto but never having seen such a victory, somehow kept his emotions in check when he called his son home, though he allowed himself A moment to announce to the Hayward Field fans: “This is my son and he is the world champion.”

On an emotional all-round night, Wightman celebrated his first World Championship gold in an event for former strong Britain in the middle distance since Steve Cram – also in the stadium commenting for the BBC – in the first event in 1983.

He then received his gold medal from two-time Olympic 1500m champion and world athletics head Sebastian Coe, according to Reuters.

Wightman’s win time of 3 minutes, 29.23 was the fastest in the world this year and confirmed his pedigree.

Ingbrigtsen took the silver, with Spaniard Mohamed Kater firmly taking the bronze, just ahead of his compatriot Mario Garcia.

Kenyan duo Timothy Cheruiyot and Abel Kipsang set the early pace, but Ingebrigitsen appeared to score just one goal as he moved up to the lead by two laps.

However, Wightman is an outstanding tactical racer and wasn’t about to sit back and watch the show. He stayed tight on Ingbrigtsen’s shoulder and then did what almost no one else did – he went over to the Norwegian on the back of the last lap and then put his shoulder in front by 200 metres.

With Ingebrigtsen unable to respond, Wightman then traveled to cross the line looking completely shocked.

Ingebrigtsen said, “I felt good, but I made a few mistakes and didn’t make it past the last 200. I own it, but I’m a little disappointed. It’s an honor to have a medal of course and I’m very happy for Jake.”
