Bridge collapses in Brazilian Amazon, 3 killed and up to 15 missing

Manaus, Sept. 29 (BNA) Firefighters and local media said that up to 15 people were missing and three confirmed dead after a bridge collapsed in the northern Brazilian state of Amazonas on Wednesday.

The Amazonas Fire Department said it was searching for up to 15 people after a bridge collapsed on the BR-319 highway in the city of Carrero, about 100 kilometers (62 miles) from the capital, Manaus, Reuters reported.

It added that 14 other people were injured in the collapse, which occurred as some vehicles crossed the bridge.

Local media G1 quoted several witnesses as saying that the bridge had a crack that caused a traffic jam before the collapse.

The state government did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
