Brazil’s Haddad Maia beats top-ranked Swiatek in Toronto

Toronto, Aug. 12 (BNA) Brazil’s Beatrice Haddad Maya beat Poland’s seed Iga Swiatek 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 in stormy conditions on Thursday to reach the quarter-finals of the National Bank of England Open.

26-year-old Haddad Maya topped the rankings for the first time to become the first Brazilian woman to qualify for the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000.

She was a back-to-back champion on grass in Nottingham and Birmingham, and came to Toronto 24th in her career world, according to the Associated Press.

Swiatek had nine double faults versus one for Maya’s blacksmith. Haddad Maya will face the winner of the late match between Belinda Bencic and Garbine Muguruza.

The Czech Karolina Pliskova won the night, beating Greek third seed Maria Sakkari 6-1, 6-7 (9), 6-3.
