Boxing icon Pacquiao announces 2022 run for Philippine presidency

Manila, September 19 (BNA) World boxing icon Manny Pacquiao threw his hat in the ring today, Sunday, to run for the position of President of the Philippines in next year’s elections.

Pacquiao, a Philippine senator from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party-Lapan party, pledged that he would govern “with integrity, compassion and transparency,” according to the German news agency (dpa).

“I am a fighter and will always be a fighter in and out of the ring,” he said, addressing his supporters and allies at the PDP-Laban party conference on Sunday.

“In my entire life, I have never held back from fighting because I stand firmly in the name of the principles and honor of the country,” added the 42-year-old, eight-team boxing champion.

Pacquiao announced his candidacy for more than a week after a rival faction of the People’s Democratic Party-Lapan endorsed Senator Christopher Joe as the presidential candidate, with incumbent President Rodrigo Duterte selected as the vice president.
